ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY-THE RAN
The origin of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) is traced from its origin with the Australian Squadron of the Royal Navy (RN) with the formation of the colonial navies, the Queensland navy, the Victorian navy and the South Australian navy.
As the Royal Navy Australian Squadron was based on Sydney, New South Wales did not need a Navy for protection against feared French or Russian intrusions.
